And the entire place was started by one woman — Leanne Lauricella. After visiting a farm in 2014, she fell in love with goats. She subsequently quit her event planning job in New York City and started a goat sanctuary.
The goats were her primary inspiration, but Lauricella was also inspired by her husband. After seeing her husband find joy after quitting his job to do something that he loved, she followed in his footsteps.
Lauricella is a native Texan, so the transition to a farm made perfect sense. In addition to ditching the fancy outfits, she also got rid of all animal products in her life. Lauricella went vegan in 2012 after developing a compassion for farm animals.
That compassion for farm animals means that the sanctuary isn't just bustling with goats, despite the name. There you can also find bunnies, pigs, cows, and sheep, all of which arrive from the Barnyard Sanctuary, where she volunteers.
While friends and family may not have supported her decision to quit her job and start a sanctuary, social media surely did. After Instagram shared one of her posts, she immediately gained 30,000 followers, making her feel like she was on the right track.
“Some people have called me foolish or irresponsible for quitting my job without a plan, but for me, it was a leap of faith,” Lauricella said. “When you find and follow your passion, all of the silly things you thought were important, don’t seem so important anymore.”
