It is the year 2016 and we live in a world where women are supposed to have equal rights, yet women are making 79 cents for every dollar earned by men. In our country, on average, women earn less money than men in pretty much every single occupation.
Well, 17-year-old Jensen Walcott from Kansas City, Kansas says enough is enough. Walcott recently applied for a job at Pizza Studio in the Legends Mall. She was super excited when she was hired on the spot and even more thrilled when she found out that her good friend, Jake Reed, was hired the same day.
When the two called one another to share the news, they discovered that they weren't offered the same pay. Walcott was offered $8.00 per hour, while Reed was offered $8.25 per hour. This means he'd be making up to $2.00 more than Walcott per shift.
Why? Well, Walcott called up the woman who had just hired her and asked the same question. The two new employees were the same age, had the same level of work experience and were hired for the exact same position. When she called her manager, assuming that the difference in the pay rates must have just been a mistake, she got a response that she wasn't quite ready for.
"I was like maybe when I'm on hold right now, she will just offer me $8.25 and everything is gonna be good but... she didn't do that," Walcott said in an interview with Fox Kansas City.
