Ever since he was a young child, 22-year-old Collin Clarke has had dreams of becoming a bodybuilder. However, Collin has Down syndrome, which makes achieving his dream a little more complicated. People with Down syndrome often suffer from hypotonia (a lack of muscle tone), so becoming a bodybuilder is something that would take a lot of extra work on Collin's part if he wanted to make his dream come true.
But the thought of doing a lot of hard work didn't hold Collin back! While working the desk at a local gym, he began to watch personal trainer and bodybuilder Glenn Ubelhorr preparing for a bodybuilding competition. After Glenn left the room, Collin entered and began doing the exact same exercises he had just seen Glenn perform. Shortly thereafter, the two started training together and became fast friends.
Together, Glenn and Collin have been working hard over the past year to become competition-ready.
Glenn told 14News that "[Collin]'s never nervous; he's just excited." That tenacious spirit has impressed not only Glenn but many other people as well who recognize the hard work that Collin has put into this particular dream. He is truly an inspiration.
At the competition, Collin had 60 seconds to perform his routine to the song "Back in Black" by AC/DC. No matter the outcome of the competition, Glenn says he is very proud of Collin and all the progress he's made over the past year. "How many of us really get to live our dream?" Glenn asked reporters from 14News. "That's gonna happen for Collin."
Laura Green is another person with Down syndrome who's also showing the world that a genetic disorder can't stop her from doing what she loves. In Laura's case, that means running a business that sells fashion accessories including jewelry, evening bags and scarves. Her business is called Serendipity, which you can support by following on Facebook. If you live in the UK, you can also support Laura by purchasing her fashionable products!
Anna Vives is a typographer who also happens to have Down syndrome. She created her own font (called Anna) which was recently used on Barcelona Football Club's jerseys as they played for the Gamper Trophy.
