In 2000, Johnny Knoxville and his motley crew first appeared on MTV in their reality show, Jackass. They stapled each other’s balls, wrestled anacondas, snorted wasabi and broke many bones throughout the 3 seasons, 4 movies and 2 half movies that made up the Jackass franchise. So after all of that self-abuse, what does the cast of Jackass look like today?
Bam Margera was one of the craziest pranksters of the Jackass gang. The fans loved him so much that he even got a spinoff show after Jackass called Viva La Bam where he tortured his parents to no end. It’s a wonder that his mom still talks to him after all the pranks he played on her for their reality show. So what is he up to now?
In a recent interview with Jenkem magazine, Bam opens up about getting back into pro skating and getting sober. Before Jackass even started, Bam was a successful skateboarder and was sponsored by Element. The show picked up and he stopped skating but now he is back. After battling alcoholism, he was on the show Family Therapy and his recent sobriety has helped bring him back to skating.
“... I couldn’t put this fucking bottle down. I never had any pill problems and I’ve never tried heroin in my life, but it’s been a real struggle for me to stay off the alcohol. But just as long you’re surrounded by good people and you have something to do, you’ll be good.”
Johnny Knoxville was the leader of the pack. Before Jackass was even an idea, Knoxville was writing for a skateboarding magazine called Big Brother. For one of his assignments he wrote an article about self-defense equipment. In the story, he tried out the equipment while editor Jeff Tremaine filmed it. This was the beginning of the Big Brother Videos, Shit, Number Two, and Boob and then CKY, CKY2K, and CKY3 and then eventually Jackass.
After Jackass, Knoxville starred in Men in Black II, The Dukes of Hazzard and the Bad Grandpa movies. More recently he filmed the Hong Kong-American action comedy, Skiptrace starring Jackie Chan and also starred in the thriller Above Suspicion. He also wrote and starred in the new upcoming movie Action Point. It looks like all that abuse on his body was worth it.
Steve “Steve-O” Glover was beyond hilarious, but deep down there was much a much sadder story that was revealed after the show ended. Steve-O suffered from a major alcohol and drug problem including PCP, ketamine and nitrous. In 2008 he sent an e-mail to friends and family threatening to end his own life. Because his friends intervened he was given a second chance at life and went to the hospital and then rehab.
Since then Steve-O has been sober and last year he did a comedy special for Showtime called Steve-O: Guilty as Charged. He has been performing stand up comedy and he is now a vegan and he meditates regularly. Who is this new Steve-O? He has certainly come a long way and found a much healthier lifestyle since his Jackass days.
Jason Acuña aka Wee Man was the smallest of the group of Jackasses and they certainly took advantage of that. Was his claim to fame kicking himself in the head? How about dressing up like an Oompa-Loompa? He was also a professional skateboarder and was the subscription manager for Big Brother magazine.
Since the end of Jackass, Acuna co-starred in the teen comedy Behaving Badly with Selena Gomez. He is still involved in the skateboarding industry and represents Nullity Skateboards. He is also an investor in the taco chain Chronic Tacos which has locations all over the United States.
Chris Pontius was always naked. After the show, he became the cohost of the Jackass spinoff Wildboyz with Steve-O. His nicknames included Partyboy, Chief Roberts, Roller Bobby, Bunny the Life Guard, Strongman and Garbage Man.
In 2013, he split with his wife Claire Nolan after being separated since 2009. I wonder if she was sick of all the naked cameos. In 2014 he was in an episode of Tyler the Creator's skit comedy show, Loiter Squad and he was seen on MTV’s Ridiculousnesslast year.
Dave England describes himself as “That one dude from Jackass who shits”. That sounds about right. Before the show he was a former pro snowboarder and skater. He was also an editor for Skintight, Big Brother, and Snowboarder Magazine.
Remember when he sunburned the word "Jackass into his chest". What about when he knocked his tooth out in the credits of Jackass Number Two? Ehren McGhehey was often the butt of the joke and would do anything for a laugh.
So what is he up to post Jackass? In 2005 his store, The Danger Valley Skate Shop in McMinnville, Oregon closed but he is still acting. He starred in several episodes of Portlandia, and he did an episode of the TV show Grimm last year.
Preston Lacy was the funny fat guy of the gang. They were constantly making fun of his weight and his ongoing gag where he chased Wee Man around may have been his claim to fame. After the show he starred in National Lampoon on TV: The Movie in 2006.
Preston took small roles the TV movie A Holiday Heist in 2011 and then the children’s movie Up on a Wooftop in 2015. He is currently living in Hollywood and is a stand up comic and even performs with Steve-O on the road.
Ryan Dunn was a member of the original CKY Crew with his bestie Bam Margera. That show led them to Jackass and then Dunn also hosted Homewrecker and Proving Ground and starred in the movies Street Dreams, Blonde Ambition and Haggard: The Movie and Minghags: The Movie.
Unfortunately Dunn died in a horrible car accident in West Goshen Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on June 20, 2011. RIP Ryan Dunn.
