After the Charlottesville riots, many people were left thinking, “How can I help?” I know a lot of people feel helpless and out of control right now. It is important to remember that there is a lot that we can do to combat racism and hate in this country.
We can go to marches and protest against racism, bigotry and white supremacy. We can donate to charities that support women, LGBTQ rights and minorities that are under attack. We can call our senators and educate ourselves. We can vote! We can donate our time to different organizations. The list goes on and on.
Lipslut is a lipstick company created by college junior Katie Sones and some friends living in San Luis Obispo, California. So far Lipslut has raised more than $40,000 for the victims of the Charlottesville attack. How did they do it?
They raised the money by selling their signature shade, “F*ck Trump." Through the end of August, 100 percent of the proceeds from the lipstick sold will go to the Charlottesville victims. Hurry up and buy it, as time is running out!
Sones launched the company Lipslut right after the 2016 presidential election as a way to give “a middle finger to the current sociopolitical landscape." They sell one shade of matte pink lipstick called "F*ck Trump" for $20. I think that one shade says it all.
In general, Lipslut donates half of their proceeds to organizations that support causes that are under attack by the Trump administration. When customers check out, they can choose between several different charities. These include Planned Parenthood, She Should Run, the ACLU and the National Organization for Women.
“Let’s just say we aren’t too pleased with our current socio-political landscape, and the standards of the cosmetics industry in general,” their website reads. “Chances are you aren’t either. Rather than complaining, we’re putting our money where our mouth is.”
When you go into their site, there is only one lipstick option to chose from. You can then click purchase for your very own F*ck Trump lipstick and when you go to check out, you will you be prompted to chose the charity you want to donate too. Through the month of August, you will see the Charlottesville option.
If you pick Charlottesville, 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the victims. If you chose any of the other options, like the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign and Planned Parenthood, they will receive 50 percent. What an awesome idea!
“Lipslut is already a political and philanthropic brand, so we already have a big platform for this, and I just thought, ‘How could we not donate in the face of this tragedy?'” Sones told the Hollywood Reporter.
I just bought four tubes of lipstick. How many will you buy?
In addition to donating to the victim’s medical bills, the company will also donate to BLM Charlottesville and the Albemarle-Charlottesville chapter of the NAACP. According to Sones, they have received more than 450 new orders since announcing their plan to donate to Charlottesville. That is 10 times more than what they typically sell in that timeframe.
The option to donate to the Charlottesville victims will be open through the end of August. In the meantime, the Lipslut team is busy working on new ideas for more campaigns and products that adhere to their company's tagline, "50 percent towards charity, 100 percent against tyranny and, of course, 100 percent cruelty free."
