Nickerson checked the trap and found something amazing: a rare blue lobster! "Wayne spotted it in the pot before he broke it over the rail," his wife Jan said, "(and) he let out a loud exclamation." She added, "He was very excited."
How rare is a blue lobster? Oceanographers estimate that only one out of two million lobsters is blue. It's caused by "a genetic defect that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein," according to the Lobster Institute.
Jan also assured the lobster's fans that Bleu (as they've nicknamed him) will stay out of harm's way. "The lobster went to a nice cool tank so he wouldn't die," she said. "He is fine....healthy and happy."
