High school students across the country are throwing their caps in the air as they leave a chapter of their life behind. Once they walk across that graduation stage they are free to pursue whatever their little hearts desire, and it's one of the best feelings to never have to suffer through another fourth period again.
There has been numerous news story recently circulating about young girls being sent home for clothing choices deemed "inappropriate." Whether it be a girl's prom dress or a seemingly innocent top, some of these dress code infractions seem kind of outrageous. Something's got to give when it comes to these strict — and sometimes straight ridiculous — school dress codes.
3. One Startling Dress Code Punishment Is Making Headlines
One high school student, in particular, has gone insanely viral for her dress code horror story. This high school senior from North Carolina wore a shirt that got her into a load of trouble, and people can't seem to understand why. One ordinary shirt had the school administration in an uproar, and things were definitely blown out of proportion.
Summer, a senior at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina, with a 4.4 GPA, caused quite the controversy by wearing this plain, slightly off-the-shoulder green shirt. Her school administration was so distraught over her top that it lead to her suspension and inability to attend her own graduation.
5. This Honor Student Has A History Of Tension With The Principal
Summer has had multiple run-ins with Hickory Ridge principal Michelle Cline that the girl's mother has been required to intervene. Summer's mother has asked the principal to call her when her daughter is in trouble, but this particular day they could not get ahold of her.
Principal Cline approached Summer about the shirt and told her that it violated dress code and she needed to change. Summer refused to change, but rather put a friend's jacket on to cover the green shirt. Although this seemed to solve the situation for the moment, the situation would only escalate later in the school day.
Summer was later bombarded by the school principal along with the school's police officer, as principal Cline ordered Summer to change her shirt or face possible arrest. Summer stated that the school's police officer “was within five feet of me, he had his hand on his gun.”
The school was able to eventually get ahold of Summer's mother, so Summer avoided arrest. She was suspended for the remainder of the school year and banned from attending any end of the school year events. This means huge consequences for this senior.
Summer is banned from attending her own high school graduation. For a student with multiple scholarships and a 4.4 GPA, this seems a little harsh. Summer isn't the first student to receive punishment for a ridiculously strict dress code at Hickory Ridge High School.
10. Principal Cline Is Known To Crack Down On Dress Code Violations
The principal of Hickory Ridge made news headlines last year for punishing 45 girls that wore leggings as pants. Although this is nothing new, students are rallying behind Summer for her unfair punishment. The internet is also going crazy over this principal's treatment of an honor student.
Many people believe Summer's ban from graduation is a little too harsh, and one Twitter user even questions some wardrobe choices of teachers. Students are protesting Summer's suspension and even questioning some sort of personal vendetta against the student.
In a news interview, she states that "sex offenders and drug dealers" have the chance to walk across the stage and graduate but she will not. Summer even believes the principal will go as far as expelling her.
Summer's suspension and ban from her own graduation have brought to light an issue that has become more and more prevalent. Have dress code rules become too strict, interfering with how students can express themselves or even feel comfortable at school? Some would say young girls have it the worst.
14. Many People Feel Young Girls Face Sexualization
Whether it be collar bones or the top of the shoulders, some angry internet-goers have expressed that young girls are forced to cover up to avoid unnecessary sexualization at school. One Twitter user even believes the principal has something against Summer.
Summer's suspension — although extreme — isn't an isolated incident at this high school. Students are sticking up for their classmate to prove that these dress code violations are unjust, and Summer deserves to wear her cap and gown to recognize her hard work all four years of high school.
