North Carolina has been in the national spotlight for passing a bill that requires transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to the gender of their birth certificate. The law has faced steady opposition from gay rights groups and others who believe that HB2 is inherently discriminatory.
As the communications manager for LGBT Progress at American Progress, McBride was asked to visit North Carolina. During her trip, she met with several trans people in the state and even attended a meeting at the Mecklenburg Government Center in Charlotte.
To combat the injustices faced by transgender people in North Carolina, McBride uploaded a picture of herself using the women's bathroom in the Mecklenburg Government Center. This harmless selfie is technically illegal.
"They say I'm a pervert. They say I'm a man dressed as a woman. They say I'm a threat to their children. They say I'm confused. They say I'm dangerous," she wrote on Instagram. "I'm just a person. We are all just people. Trying to pee in peace."
"This is about real people being able to access the bathroom and being able to participate in pubilc life," said McBride. "I'm a person just trying to make it through my day. Regardless of how I look I shouldn't be afraid of discrimination or violence."
