Braces were the cause of so many struggles in our youth, not the least of which was deciding what to do with them when getting your school portrait taken. Did you close-mouth smile over them and risk the awkward face? Or did you go full-on metal mouth?
You weren't just any old nobody! And all your classmates just had to know that. Whether it was jewelry, your outfit or your bright blue cast, you had to make sure something in your school portrait set you apart.
Were you first chair violin? Or captain of the basketball team? Or president of the tarantula club? No matter what activities you took part in, they had to be represented in your school photo. How else would people know how accomplished you were?
No matter how hard you concentrated on the camera and tried to keep your eyes open through the flash, when the picture came out, you looked like you got distracted by a bird in the background. Either that, or your eyes were completely closed.
