Being a foster kid is incredibly tough. It’s scary to be moved from one home to the other, not knowing who is going to take care of you and having to adapt to a new environment every time. Kids need stability and a routine so it’s hard to live the foster life, especially at a young age.
There’s also the issue of where the kid ends up. When the foster family is less than adequate, then that’s an added fear thrown on the kid’s shoulders. Not being able to trust those taking care of you is incredibly difficult when someone is still so young.
Thankfully, there are success stories in the foster care world. When kids are placed with parents who are deeply committed to their well-being, then these kids will never want to look for anyone else. As is the case of Janielle and Elijah.
Janielle and Elijah were welcomed into the Gilmour family three years ago as foster kids. The two were nine and seven years old back then and only looking for people who would love them as kids need to be loved. Luckily, these two hit the jackpot.
Courtney and Tom Gilmour were a hit with the kids. Recently, these two planned a trip to Disney for their newest members. It’s not everything but, come on, a trip to Disney is one hell of a gift for kids.
Just before the trip to Orlando, however, the Gilmours received incredible news. The paperwork had gone through and they had officially adopted Janielle and Elijah. Now, receiving epic news of this kind just before a trip to Disney is a heck of a sign.
These parents couldn’t just blurt it out at home. They knew they had to do something special to surprise their youngest members. In order to do that, they asked the people at Disney to give them a hand.
The adults realized that there was only one magical creature who could give the kids the surprise of a lifetime. Mickey Mouse himself was the one who would help surprise the kids in the best possible way. Courtney uploaded a video of the whole thing on Facebook and it’s safe to say that the kids were truly surprised.
In the video, Janiella and Elijah are filmed meeting Mickey Mouse. They take pictures with the creature. Smiling contentedly, a photographer captures the moment and the kids even help Mickey with a magic trick.
After a while, the kids think it’s time they move on. Suddenly, a staff member comes up to the kids and tells them that Mickey himself has something he needs to share with them. Little did they know what was in store for them.
Mickey hugs the kids who are in tears. Soon, Courtney and Tom join the hugging fest. Everyone is crying and hugging. You can feel the sense of happiness that comes from the whole family as the kids learn they’re now officially part of the family.
It’s hard not to shed a tear when you watch the video. Clearly, there’s nothing more these kids wanted than to be adopted by Tom and Courtney. That initial shock and then the tears show that their dream had finally come true…
…and it did in a place that’s all about dreams and making them come true. The video has had over 1 million views and for Courtney Gilmore, this is good news because it serves as a way of raising awareness of foster care and adoption. She told NBC, “I shared the video because I want to continue to draw attention to foster care and adoption.” And she did, in the most beautiful way.
