We’ve all seen not-so-perfect makeup applications, and in the age of contour we’ve seen flawless makeup. We’re here to try to show you the latter. With the help of YouTube makeup star, Ali Andreea, we’ve gathered up some of the most common mistakes women make when it comes to applying their makeup.
First thing’s first, let’s not forget the primer. Primer is essential in keeping your makeup in place all day, and minimizing the look of pores and other flaws.
Andreea says that she notices a lot of women use the same brush for applying powder as they would for bronzer. You should at least have three different brushes for your face. A contour brush, a powder brush and a blush brush. You could probably also use another brush for bronzer. It could be the same size as your contour brush. You don’t want to use the same brush for all of these applications because of color transfer, and it will give your makeup an overall muddy look.
A lot of women will use a beauty blender to blend their makeup. And that’s great! But, you always want to wet the beauty blender before applying any product to it. Otherwise, it will soak up all the product. Ultimately, soaking up any money you used on said product.
When applying your makeup in the morning, it’s best to use natural light. Even if your bathroom has the biggest mirror, the harsh artificial light will not provide you with a realistic view of how your makeup will look outside. It’s better to use a smaller mirror and go sit down in front of a window.
A lot of women will roughly just smear their foundation onto their faces with their beauty blenders. The best way is to dab the foundation in. You want to move in a circular motion while your dabbing to the outside of the face.
Your foundation shouldn’t end at your jawline. If it ends there, you end up looking like you are wearing a mask, and you’re making it very obvious that you’re wearing foundation. You should gently apply foundation a little below your jawline so there is a smooth transition between your face and neck.
While it may seem like a convenient place, you shouldn’t store your makeup in the bathroom. Because of the humidity caused by the shower, your products will quickly get a buildup of bacteria. You should store the makeup and brushes in a cool, dry place. If some of your beauty products contain natural oils, you should consider storing them in the fridge.
Just like your face brushes, you should have several eyeshadow brushes. You should never use the same brush to apply two different shades of eye shadow. This will cause color transfer. Also, you don’t want to put a dark shade all over the lid, but just slightly in the crease and side of the eye. Also, you should consider putting a eyeshadow primer on your lids so that your color can last all day.
You may have seen this technique for applying contour to the face. You know, where you suck in your cheeks and place the contour in the crevice it creates? No, that’s all wrong. Andreea says to start at the hairline with the contour and to find the hole right below your cheek bone. From there, gently apply the contour and stop just at the outside corner of your eye.
A lot of women will apply their blush directly above their contour and bronzer, near the hairline. This is incorrect. You want to smile and gently apply the blush directly onto the apple of your cheeks. Don’t go overboard though.
Keep your makeup products hygienic. It’s important to wash your makeup brushes. If your rubbing them on your face, you’re constantly saturating them with oil and whatever gunk you have on your face. If you use your brushes daily, you need to be washing them about once a week.
Applying dark eyeliner to your inside lower lid was popular a while ago. However, it just makes your eyes look smaller. Instead, use a nude eyeliner on the inside of your lid. If you want to create some depth, add some shadow slightly under the lash line.
A lot of women will apply mascara just at the tips of their eyelashes. You actually want to start at the base of your lash line and wiggle the wand upwards towards the tips. This will give you a deeper, thicker and darker-looking lashes.
When choosing a brow pencil/filler, you don’t want to go too dark. If you have lighter hair, you should go about one or two shades darker than your natural hair color. If you have darker hair, you want to go one or two shades lighter. Otherwise, you might end up with some fake looking eyebrows. Also, when filling in your eyebrow, follow your natural eyebrow shape.
Applying lipstick to dry lips can make your color wear off easily. It can also dry out your lips. It’s better to put some moisturizer on your lips while your doing the rest of your face. Once the moisturizer is absorbed, your can apply the lipstick.
