Kris said her daughter had reportedly been spending the day drinking energy drinks, without drinking water. Lanna had also not consumed any alcohol, so Kris believes the energy drinks are what led to her daughter's death.
Many studies have shown that consumption of energy drinks can lead to major heart problems. A 2014 study from the European Society of Cardiology reported that consuming energy drinks one after another can "lead to a number of adverse conditions including angina, cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and even sudden death."
A study in The Canadian Journal of Cardiology echoed those concerns, stating "One can (250 mL) of an energy drink per day is safe for most healthy adolescents. Energy drink consumption before or during sports practice should be avoided."
