Let’s face it, going back to school is kind of a drag. But planning your look for the new year isn’t, so check out these hairstyles that we love for back-to-school!
For this simple hairstyle, all you need to do is Dutch braid a thin section of hair in the front going down one side, and tie it all together with a low ponytail.
(If you don’t know how to Dutch braid, check out this video.)
This one is great if you have super long hair and just want to get it out of your face. All you have to do is make a high pull-through bun and leave a significant tail at the end. Then, wrap the tail around the base of the bun and secure into place with bobby pins.
How cute are these curls? They’ll need some overnight action, but it’s so worth it! We’ll let this video do the talking.
Put your hair into a low, messy ponytail and add a headband. Next, twist the ponytail into a bun and pin into place. Just add sunglasses.
This hairstyle is great for when your hair is wet and you still want it to look cute. Start at one side of your head like you’re doing two French braids, but instead braid diagonally, grabbing hair from both sides of your head. It sounds hard but it just takes a little practice!
If you’re into channeling your inner Zenon, this style is the one for you. Separate hair into pigtails and tie one section out of the way. Tie up the other section into a super high pigtail with a clear elastic band. Next, twist hair into a bun and secure with bobby pins. Repeat on the other side and pull out some front strands of hair for a messy look!
This style looks great on thicker, wavy hair. Just French braid loosely from the top of your head, straight down and secure with a clear elastic band.
In order to achieve this look, section off freshly washed natural hair into several twists, while leaving the top half in a pull-through bun. Next, twist the top half of your hair into a loose bun. Let hair dry overnight. Unravel the twists and separate the curls.

Here’s another style that’s great for wet hair. Section hair into pigtails, and starting with one side, twist all the way down the side, starting at the top of your head. Next, pin the twists into place and repeat on the other side. Lastly, gather both sides at the nape of your neck into a messy bun.
This one looks effortless, and as it turns out, it is pretty effortless to achieve. Just pull the top quarter of your hair into a high, messy bun. And voila!
This one is pretty similar to the last one, but it’s better for when you’re feelin’ a little fancier. Section off the top quarter of your hair into clean parts using the end of a comb, then Dutch braid the middle section and secure into a messy bun with an elastic.
This style looks super complicated, but it’s actually pretty dang easy. Just secure hair into a half-updo, and twist the lower section into a bun. Next, divide the top section into two parts and secure with clear elastics and twist both sections. Lastly, secure the ends with elastics, cross them over the top of your head and pin into place.
Here’s another easy style that works best on ultra-long hair. Tie your hair into a ponytail. Next, tie off small, even sections going down the length of the ponytail. Lastly, pull hair from each small section to make it look like bubbles!
While we can’t all be Zendaya, we can try out her cute hairstyle. All you need to do for this one is make a low braid and pull sections of it to create a super messy look. You can also try to tousle the top of your head if you want it to look extra effortless!
Sometimes simplicity is the way to go. For this one, just slip a pretty headband into short natural hair and you’re all done!
