For a while there, somewhere in the 2000s, the model was replaced by the celebrity on the cover of major magazines. Actresses and singers like Nicole Kidman were given beauty campaigns and front covers. The model was left with couture shows and editorials found inside the magazine. Poor models. It's like they were beautiful for nothing! What was that all about? They weren't even booking major fashion campaigns anymore, because there were so many beautiful, more recognizable celebrities that could take their places. This was a dark, sad time for models.
Let's have a moment of silence for all of those gorgeous, svelte ladies who weren't getting the attention they deserved. Okay, moment done? Cool. Now let's move onto an era where models came back into fashion. (Literally.)
These days, you can smell it in the air that it’s the age of the model again. An age that alludes to another glorious decade — the '90s. A decade where supermodels were revered and placed on magazine covers, billboards, and just about any teenage boy’s room. I guarantee that if I asked you to name five models right now, you would be able to in a heartbeat. Why? Because models are so IN. They're back baby, and they're all over your Instagram feed, magazine covers, and Billboards.
Need proof that the supermodel has made a big comeback this past decade? It’s clear by the fact that we know so many of them by their first name. I mean, hello, there’s Gigi and Bella, Kendall and Irina, Candice and Lily.
And then of course there's Chrissy and Cara and Karlie and Adriana. See how many models you know? They are everywhere, and they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I think it's safe to say that the 2010s have brought supermodels back in a big way.
Models have a voice now too. That’s thanks to social media like Instagram which helps them not only to connect with fans but it also enables them to share the things they care about. Most importantly, charity.
Sure, yeh, but these girls also know how to use Instagram to make us jealous. Come on, admit it. Your life is great and fulfilling, blah blah, of course, it is. It doesn’t mean theirs doesn’t look appealing at all!
Just by following some of the Victoria’s Secret models is enough to make us go "nehh" about our own lives. The girls are always capturing the most glamorous moments. Even at the gym things look good on their Instagram!
In July of 2017, two of the angels, Sara Sampaio and Elsa Hosk, talked to Elite Daily about a number of things. One of the things they shared was how they take the perfect Instagram shot. It’s not what you think.
Sampaio told Elite Daily, “The lighting makes all the difference! But I think what's the most important really is being authentic. Show a little bit of who you are, but without giving too much, cause [some things] are supposed to be private.”
Hosk talks about the no nos of an elaborate picture too. She said, “I think you can feel when a photo is staged or authentic. I think people really respond to photos that feel authentic, like when it's a snapshot out of your real life, when it's a really cool image.”
