How can thousands of dead fish eyes glaring up from the skating rink at skaters ever be considered a fun thing? How did this idea get past anyone at Space World or anyone living in the real world? Yes, there are many more questions here than answers.
3. A New Kind Of Frozen Fish Idea, But New Isn't Always Better
Ice skating is a popular family activity, so the added appeal of sea animals for kids to observe might have seemed like a good idea to parents. After all, many amusement park attractions today do tend to combine learning with fun activities for kids.
5. Some Of The Dead Fish Arrangements Looked Artistic
Some of the groupings of the thousands of dead fish used in the skating rink at Japan's Space World did have a creative look. The whole dead creatures thing though was tough for many people to get over.
6. Using All Photographs Would Have Totally Erased The Dead Fish Creepiness Factor
Photos of rays and sharks were used along with about 25 species of dead fish to create the ice aquarium. Too bad Space World didn't just stick with photos, or there would have been nothing creepy or controversial.
7. But What Do Aquariums And Skating Have To Do With Space Anyway?
Even odder than having a skating rink full of dead fish in the first place is for a space-themed amusement park not to have used the indoor rink area for at least something related to space. Even photos of the colder planets in the solar system under the ice would have made more sense for Space World than using dead fish. Well, almost anything makes more sense than using dead fish.
8. Are We Likely To See More Creepy AF Skating Rinks Like This?
If Space World's dead fish aquarium skating rink would have proved a success, then it stands to reason that other theme parks would use similar ideas. But the public response was overwhelmingly negative because of the dead fish element, so the skating rink was actually forced to close after only a few weeks in business.
9. The Dead Fish Skating Rink Shocked And Grossed Out Many People
For some people, it wasn't only that it's creepy AF to skate on a rink of dead fish, but a total waste of food as well. Although Space World did buy the fish at food markets, a spokesperson from the attraction said the seafood wasn't fit to eat, although it's not clear why. Despite the issue of food, the main turn-off for many protestors remained that they thought using dead fish in a skating rink was disrespectful and immoral.
