We say we’re all modern and forward thinking but some minds are still hard to crack. Ones that will frown up the idea of gay people wanting to do the same things straight people do. Things like falling in love and getting married.
Often, it’s the mind of the oldest generation that is hardest to crack. And yet, one older woman has proved that we should never generalize. Even more than that, she has proved that love wins, no matter what.
3. The Plan Was To Propose
This is what happened when Jessica Rodriguez decided to take her girlfriend, Chelsea Miller, to The Art Institute of Chicago. The two weren’t there on a random visit, however, as Rodriguez was planning on proposing to Miller. What both hadn’t planned was for their special moment to become a social hit.
While the couple getting engaged is heart-warming in itself, it’s the older lady in the background who has the internet talking. Gasping in delight at the two girls getting engaged, the older lady looks smitten by this special moment. This lady has unintentionally stolen the girls’ thunder in the sweetest way.
The lady’s reaction was captured in a photo by one of their friends, Ed Sanchez. The latter was waiting to capture the moment forever in a photo for the girls. He did just that and managed to capture the sweet reaction of the older lady too.
The girls were too distracted and happy to notice the older lady or the crowd gathering around them and cheering. It was only when they got home that they noticed the reaction of the sweet lady, thanks to Sanchez’s photo. The two had to post the shot online.
“We were going over the photos my friend Ed Sanchez took (and) we discovered that gem with her sweet reaction. It really made that photo even more special,” Rodriguez added. It wasn’t just them who thought the old lady’s reaction was sweet. Twitter is just as smitten by this lady.
The tweet with the photo of the older lady’s reaction has already received more than 100,000 retweets and 300,000 likes. Rodriguez has said how this experience has been “overwhelming.” “(We) definitely were not expecting that, or the amount of people that gathered in the gallery to watch and clap for us.”
“It has been quite shocking and something we are not used to. I think we are making progress in the world to be more accepting. We definitely appreciate that. We have loved every single sweet comment from around the world.”
The two broke up because the long-distance thing was too hard but it would not be the end of these two. “Things were never the same and when I was almost done with my undergrad degree and with the flexibility to move anywhere I reached out to her. I told her how I still felt about her and she felt the same way. Since that day we’ve been together ever since and have now lived together for almost two years.”
These days, the couple live together in Chicago. They have been there for the last two years and in the next year or two, they hope to be married. “As someone who will soon become a lawyer, it is very important for me how something is viewed under the law.”
“Having now the right to marry is just so important and is a step to show that in this country we are making progress to see LGBT people as humans and not second-class citizens. We plan on having a family and want our children to grow up to feel equal. With two married parents, who committed to each other under the law and under a spiritual ceremony.”
“It’s really no different than why a straight couple would want to get married, you know. To show commitment to one another and share the rest of their lives together.” And if everyone’s reaction is like that of the older lady’s, then maybe gay couples wouldn’t have to keep giving reasons as to why they choose to get married.
