Little league teams often use the same logos/names as the major leagues. Alvinston's team is named the Alvinston Indians, borrowing the same logo as the Cleveland Indians, whose name and logo has been the subject of lots of controversy.
The Alvinston Indians decided that enough is enough, and they are changing their team's name and logo. Dan Cumming, an Alvinston Indians coach and board member of the Alvinston Minor Ball Association explained the kid's perspective toThe Huffington Post:"They want to be respectful, they don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. So when they heard that our team name and our team logo was disrespectful to indigenous community, I think kids get that. They understand that and see this as a positive."
The Cleveland Indians haven't changed their name and logo, despite studies showing that it's harmful to Native Americans. But these kids are taking a stand.
Coach Andy Triest told theNY Daily News, "It's tradition here, but tradition doesn't always mean it's right. We're just trying to start a new tradition, a more socially acceptable and politically correct one that works for our town. Let's call the name what it is: 'Indians' is outdated."
