Over the years, there have been some ridiculous reality TV shows. Whatever it is, people have seemed to find a budget for it to turn it into a reality show. There were the cupcake wars and shows about Wags. There were the countless celebrity reality TV shows and worst of all, the ones where “love” is the main theme. I say “were” but clearly, these shows are still very much alive. One reality show which isn’t and which felt inspirational at the time, was the Biggest Loser.
For a while there, the Biggest Loser felt different as a reality show. It felt like something even skeptics would want to participate in. For people struggling with weight loss, the show was a dream. It was a way for a lucky few to focus on losing weight and nothing else, while constantly being monitored by professionals who knew what they were doing.
Few people got the chance to become contestants on the show and yet, it still served as such an inspirational platform for viewers all over the world. Watching people lose so much weight is always fascinating. We got to learn the sacrifices these people were doing to lose weight and we saw them sweat and cry to push themselves to the limit.
Overall, the show was a hit for everyone. The contestants were getting to lose weight and they were working towards the chance to win a grand prize. As viewers, we got to learn new workouts and the right things to eat to lose weight. And yet, what we can’t forget is that the Biggest Loser was still a reality show, it wasn’t real life, and because of this, the contestants are now having to deal with the consequences of having lost so much weight in so little time.
The biggest concern viewers had about the show was the extreme weight loss the contestants went through. People started wondering how these contestants were able to lose so much weight so fast. Moreover, questions arose as to whether these contestants were managing to keep the weight off.
It turns out, viewers were right in being skeptic. Many of the contestants on the Biggest Loserdid gain much of the weight back. Some are even heavier now than they were before. But it has nothing to do with the fact that these people were once heavy.
The problem was that they had lost the weight too quickly. Even researchers have confirmed this. Researchers who have been following the show’s contestants have confirmed that keeping the weight off is even harder for those who have participated in the show.
Researchers have said how some contestants have “admitted to starving and dehydrating themselves to lose more weight during the competition.” This is something that can work for a while. However, in the long run, the weight will creep upon them once again because the body cannot be dehydrated for too long.
It’s not just the researchers and the viewers who have expressed such thoughts. The contestants themselves have seen this pattern too. For instance, the winner of the first season, Ryan Benson, lost 122 pounds during his participation in the reality show. However, this man later gained 140 pounds.
Benson explained that he gained back 32 pounds just five days after the show ended. The guy wasn’t even bingeing. It was because he started drinking a lot of water again, so he was merely gaining back water weight.
Such extreme methods cause severe damage to the body’s metabolism. The contestants were losing a great deal of weight in a short amount of time. As a result, their body’s metabolism slowed down “to conserve weight.”
What researchers are saying then, is that copying the weight loss methods of the Biggest Loser will only make it worse for you. Losing weight fast sounds good. Hell, it sounds amazing but it won’t serve you well in the long run.
You know what you have to do. It doesn’t sound fun or glamorous and you’ll think you have no patience for all this but in the long run, going slow is the only way you’ll be able to keep the weight off. Why would you want to lose weight fast when you know that it only makes it worse for your future self?
At the end of the day, there is nothing complicated about losing weight. You might think there is but there isn’t: it’s just the media making you believe how complicated it is. Weight loss is a simple sum of eating 500 fewer calories than your required daily intake. If you eat clean and move your body, you’re already halfway there to losing weight.
