When Drake raps about drinking every night because he drinks to his accomplishments, he really means it. Drake currently has a net worth of $90 million. The Canadian also recently placed #5 on the Forbes Five list of wealthiest hip-hop artists. That's not too shabby!
Where does all that money come from? Drake's insane tour schedule earns the artist $1 million per night. Additionally, he has deals with companies including Nike and Apple that keep the cold hard cash rolling in.
But Drake has other sources of income besides his music. Most people are familiar with the trivia that Drake was on Canadian teen-show Degrassi. But most people don't know how much ka-ching! Drake is still making from the show.
From 2001 to 2007, Drake (then Aubrey Graham) played Jimmy Brooks on Canadian teen show Degrassi. After Jimmy got shot in the back by a fellow student, he had to spend his time on the show in a wheelchair. The show was a classic — and we're not using that term lightly.
The show's "so bad it's good" nature has earned it a cult status. It tackled the tough issues facing TV teens, such as teen pregnancy, bullying, abortion, homosexuality and, of course, pronouncing about as "aboot." In it's hey day, it was one of the most watched shows in Canada and did well in America when it was aired on TeenNick.
So it makes sense that Drake is still rolling in royalties from his stint as a teen actor. How much bank is Drake making? He recently posted one of his royalty checks on Instagram, and, well... let's just say he shouldn't quit his day job as, you know, being f**king Drake.
Drake (aka ChampagnePapi) posted a royalty check on Instagram. The artist earned a whopping $8.25! "Degrassi money still coming in don't sleeeeeeeep," Drake captioned the photo. That money's going to pay for his private jet! Or at least a bag of peanuts on his private jet.
The show was cancelled in 2015, but it's been available to stream on Netflix since 2016. All that streaming money is going straight into Drake's pocket! So every time you rewatch Degrassi, you're making a rich man $8.25 richer.
Drake hasn't been ashamed of his secret past as a Canadian TV star. He's mentioned it in interviews, and even rapped about it. On his 2007 song "The Presentation," Drake raps, “They like, ‘Damn who’s Drake, where’s wheelchair Jimmy at?'”
Drake also boasts about how much bank he made from Degrassi on his song “You Know, You Know." “I’m the reason you can find my city on an atlas page / Half a million dollars later and my taxes paid / And I’m still spendin’ money from my actin days," raps Drake. And the money from his acting days keeps on rolling in, apparently!
Drake is now rolling in dough from his music, but back in the day, Drake's family was struggling financially when he appeared on Degrassi. “My mother was very sick,” said Drake. “We were poor, like broke. The only money I had was coming in off of Canadian TV, which wasn’t much money when you break it down.”
Drake's royalty check may feel a little small, but Drake has mentioned that his whole check for appearing on the show wasn't a lot either. “A season of Canadian television is under a teacher’s salary, I’ll tell you that much,” Drake once said. Better to stick with being a rapper/heartthrob/mogul! It's more lucrative!
Drake started getting into music while working on Degrassi. The actor turned rapper discussed how hard he'd have to work with W Magazine in 2005. “Back then, I’d spend a full day on set and then go to the studio to make music until 4 or 5 a.m. I’d sleep in my dressing room and then be in front of the cameras again by 9 a.m. Eventually, they realized I was juggling two professions and told me I had to choose. I chose this life," said Drake. Looks like he chose correctly!
