Since the school was having financial problems, she thought that posting the photo would draw attention to the issue and maybe someone would step in and help. But she ended up getting attention she didn't expect...
Juco got suspended for posting the photo. “I was called to the office and told by one of the assistant principals that an administrator found a photo of the girl’s bathroom on social media and that I’d be issued a three-day out-of-school suspension for ‘inappropriate use of electronics,'” said Juco.
The school cited a rule against using phones on campus. Since Juco's photo was of the school, it was evidence she had broken the rule. Many schools across the country have similar policies forbidding the use of phones.
The backlash against the suspension ultimately saved Juco. Dr. Michele Harmala, the Wayne-Westland Community Schools superintendent, heard about Juco's story and ended up expunging the suspension from Juco's record.
Harmala said she wasn't aware of the maintenance issue before Juco posted her photo, but now it's getting fixed. "I reached out to them. They sent a plumber out right away. We had a pipe that reached the faucet that was corroding and needs to be replaced and that's underway right now," said Harmala.
