It seems that one man is proving that you don’t need a whole lot of experience to compete in one of the biggest Poker tournaments in the world. That man’s name is John Hesp. He is a 64-year-old from Hull in the UK.
The semi-retired grandad of seven has always dreamed of going to Vegas. Specifically, to go there and play in the World Series of Poker. So, this man did what any good husband would do: he asked his wife if it was OK if he went to Vegas and when she said yes, Hesp packed his bags and left for the week.
Hesp even talked about what led him to take part in such a competition. “I’ve never played a big competition like this but it’s one of the things I’ve had on my bucket list for a while now. I said to my wife about three months ago, ‘Would you mind if I went and played?’ and came with a pal of mine from Bridlington.”
It's been an incredible week for Hesp. He’s “been having a ball the whole week. It's the most amazing experience of my life... it's a completely surreal, unbelievable experience that I never in my wildest dreams would ever imagine.”
Despite the excitement, this man still has his family in the UK on his mind. Hesp took to Facebook to thank everyone for their support. He wrote: “I would like to thank my wife Mandy and all my family and friends back home for supporting me in this and hope that I've done them, Bridlington and East Yorkshire proud.”
Besides his family, Hesp has impressed professional poker players too. Paul Jackson, a professional poker player, spoke about Hesp’s accomplishment. He said, “It's so rare and difficult for someone of his limited ability to do so well.”
Jackson added that “to get through such a large field...It's a freak occurrence that's unlikely ever to be repeated.” It seems that Hesp has proven to be one of a kind, so let’s hope he beat the odds again this past Saturday and goes back home a millionaire!
Hesp has done more than getting inside the competitive world of poker. This grandpa has shown us that it’s never too late to cross something off our bucket list in an extraordinary way. So, what the hell are you waiting for?
