Cosplay has been around longer than you'd imagine. Like, a really long time. The first WorldCon was in 1939 - that's World Science Fiction Convention. Maybe you've heard of a little something called Comic Con? You know, that small deal that happens in San Diego? The first Comic Con was in 1970. Dressing up like your favorite characters has been around a long time before any of those things, though. You can't say you don't think a little kid from long ago probably dressed up as Jesus at some point? No, you can't say that.
Anyway, it's a massively popular pastime, and you've likely seen countless awesome costumes of your favorite characters. Maybe you've even seen people running around in the park LARPing. Maybe you actually do that yourself. But you've likely never a cosplayer like Xia Mei Jiang.
Jiang is a Chinese cosplayer that goes by the name Bololi online. She flawlessly transforms herself into anime and video game characters. Doing so, she's amassed a large, geeky fan base. Maybe you heard that a lot of characters get a lot of flak for having unrealistic body proportions. Remember all that flak that even Barbie was getting? Well, that's because lots of anime characters and Barbie herself do in fact have unrealistic body proportions. No woman can live up to that kind of standard, and we shouldn't have to. Except Jiang. She actually kind of does live up to those standards, and we're equally impressed, jealous and wowed by her physique that she uses to dress up like those characters.
Here she is as D.Va from Overwatch. She looks so much like her character I'm almost afraid her mech armor is about to come crashing down. And yes, we do actually mean mech armor. This isn't some kind of joke. Bololi has a way of bringing these characters to life in a way you've never seen.
Here we see her dressed up and acting out as Lucoa. This character is a former dragon goddess with ludicrous proportions. They seem cartoonish in the show, yet are somehow brought to life through Bololi's... talents.
Here she is as another badass. Aside from Street Fighter and Tekken, the Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series from SNK are some of the most popular fighting games of all time. And if you're at all familiar with their roster of characters, you know who Bololi chose to dress up as.
Yet, here she is, brought to glorious life. Inventive cosplay is the greatest, even when it's not mind-blowingly sexy. But it doesn't hurt when it is. Follow Bololi to see what she comes up with and who she dresses up as next.
