For the past ten years, The Devil Wears Prada is one of our favorite movies. We can never get enough of Meryl Streep's portrayal of the Anna Wintour-esque Miranda Frost. Nor can we get enough of Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Anna-Wintour's-former-assistant-and-Devil-Wears-Prada-author-Lauren-Weisberger-esque Andy Sachs.
But we've just discovered a deleted scene from the decade-old film that may change the way you think about it forever. Can you believe it? You've been watching The Devil Wears Prada for ten whole years not knowing this scene exists, not knowing that the film you've been enjoying all this time has been a lie.
We're all familiar with the classic "charity ball" scene. In the scene, lowly assistant Andy finally proves herself to her stern boss Miranda. We've seen it a thousand times. We pretty much have it memorized at this point.
But it's Andy to the rescue! She notices the display and Miranda's embarrassment. Andy saves the day by asking Miranda's boss a question, pulling him away and distracting him from Miranda's drunk husband.
So far so good, right? But the next part of the deleted scene is the part that completely ruins it and will make you want to burn every single DVD of The Devil Wears Prada that you own (if people even own DVDs anymore). Miranda is - dare we say it - nice?
The scene would have felt more out of place in the movie than someone wearing overalls at that charity ball (and not like "fashion overalls" that Gigi Hadid wears - actual overalls). It makes total sense that it got deleted. Because it turns the movie into a completely different movie.
It's crazy that one scene — or even one line — could completely change a movie! Even though we've never met Andy or Miranda (and can't ever because they're made up), it feels as if we know them. Maybe we know them a little too much?
Saying, "Thank you" would be completely out of character for Miranda Priestly. She's never nice. Even at the end of the movie, when she acknowledges Andy, she only taps her glasses. A little means a lot when it comes to Miranda, and saying "thank you" would be completely extra.
The moment, however, does give us a glimpse into the complexities of Mirada Priestly's life. She's a high-powered woman who has everything together, except for her personal life. She runs Runway like a tight ship, but she can't exercise any sort of control over her drunken husband. And that alone makes us feel for her.
However, for her to respond to Andy's gesture with "Thank you" is too much. It's completely out of character for Miranda, and it takes us out of the movie, and we hate it. We don't even think that Mirada Priestly knows what the words "thank you" mean, much less how to say them.
Miranda Priestly is easy to hate, and that's what we love about her. Who wants to see a cold bitch thawing out for a second? Not us! So we say, "thank you" to the filmmakers for taking "thank you" out of the movie
