Christopher Hope-Smith is a dad from Leeds, England. In June, 2017, he posted an unusual series of tweets. It included a request to reach out to any celebrities who might want to wish his son a happy birthday.
Apparently, Christopher's son Ollie has a bully who has been taunting him about his birthday. It's never fun to have to deal with someone who feels the need to tear other people down. So Christopher was looking for a little help.
If you are bullied as a child, it can sometimes feel like the bully always wins. Christopher was hoping that this request could turn out to be a win for the side of kindness. It was maybe a long shot, but it couldn't hurt to ask.
Once word of Ollie's birthday got out, the well-wishes came pouring in. One came from British Olympian Tom Bosworth. He said he's not actually famous, but it's not everyday an Olympian wishes you a happy birthday.
Ollie even got a birthday message from Arnold Schwarzenegger! Arnold also mentioned he'll be giving a speech in Ollie's hometown of Leeds in September, and hoped Ollie and his family could come. (Then he signed of with "Hast la vista, baby," because that's just what Arnold does.)
It might be unlikely that Ollie knows who Monica Lewinsky is, but that's beside the point. In recent years, she's become very vocal in speaking out against bullying of all kinds. And if she can survive years of bullying, then there's hope for just about everyone else.
If you were a teenage girl in the late '80s, there's a good chance you would have loved getting a birthday greeting from Corey Feldman. Of course, Ollie is not a teenage girl in the late '80s. But if he's ever seen The Goonies, he probably thinks this message is pretty cool too.
In response to all the attention, Ollie's mom got on Christopher's Twitter to express her thanks. She said, "I am completely overwhelmed by everyones kind thoughts. You do not know what this means to me and will to Ollie when we show him. "
Ollie's mom continued, saying " It is heartbreaking listening to an 8 year old think that he is worthless and 'shouldn't be here.' I know that we are definitely not the only ones in the world to be going through this but I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much."
