You’ve seen the plot a million times. That old movie trope where the ugly duckling who is always bullied and made fun of takes off her glasses or loses weight, buys some nice clothes, puts on some makeup and then is seen as a beautiful swan. Suddenly the guys want to be with her, and the girls want to be just like her.
Well here is what happened to real-life-ugly-duckling-turned-swan Emma Pope when she lost 145 pounds over the course of a few years. Emma grew up in San Marcos, Texas. She was obese growing up, at one point weighing up to 315 pounds and wearing a size 30.
Once during a volleyball game, the people in the stands started chanting that she should get her "fat ass off the court."
“I was referred to as 'the fat girl' all the time," she said, "but the worst moment happened during a volleyball match, when I was hurled abuse at because of the outfit I was wearing...A bunch of guys yelled that I should get my 'fat ass off the court' and crazy stuff, it got so bad they had to be escorted away by the police.”
This was the breaking point for her, and she knew it was time to lose weight. So at age 17, she began to work out 4 or 5 times a week. She stopped eating pasta and pizza and started to learn portion control. Within a year, she already lost 40 pounds.
She is having a great time rejecting the guys who once bullied her so badly and has also received apologies from mean girls who once tortured her.
“It's quite offensive that it took me losing weight for them to even consider speaking to me," she said. "I've had plenty of apology messages now, even one of the girls who used to call me fat got in touch wanting advice on how to lose weight.”
So how does she feel about all this attention since her transformation?
“I don't think they expected me to turn out this way and they regret being so horrible," she said. "I doubt they are apologizing out the kindness of their heart, there's definitely an ulterior motive so with any attempts to flirt with me I reject them immediately.”
Emma has continued to workout 4 times a week and eats a clean diet of 2,000 calories and has never felt better.
She said, “While the cruel comments were upsetting and difficult to deal with when I was younger, I just laugh it off now because I look and feel great...Before I was athletic as I could have been at 315lbs, but now since losing weight I'm incredibly athletic and never dreamed I could be like this.”
