We all follow at least some of those people on Instagram — the ones who post glamorous photos of themselves jet-setting around the world and lounging on multi-million dollar yachts. No matter how obnoxious these Instagrammers are, you can’t seem to stop following them because their lives are just too exciting and Insta-worthy. But have you ever wondered if their lives are too good to be true? Meet Melina Roberge and Isabelle Lagace, two Canadian women who went a bit Insta-crazy about their luxurious vacay right before getting busted for smuggling drugs.
Hailing from Quebec, Roberge and Lagace spent two months aboard the MS Sea Princess, a luxury cruise that traveled from the UK to Australia. But you better not envision them on a Carnival cruise because tickets for the MS Sea Princess cost about $15,000 a pop.
These bombshell drug smugglers certainly didn’t feel the need to fly under the radar during their trip, as they posted excessively on Instagram every time their cruise made a stop at a new desirable locale. The cruise went to numerous different countries, such as Thailand, the U.S., Bermuda and more. Above is a photo of Roberge riding an ATV in Peru.
The cruise also made a stop in New York City, where the duo explored Times Square. As for Roberge’s caption, I do hope she enjoyed every single minute of that exorbitantly expensive cruise because she likely won’t be doing any international traveling anytime soon. She and Lagace are facing life in prison in Australia.
Roberge and Lagace weren’t the only ones arrested in Australia on drug smuggling charges. Apparently, the hot young duo was traveling with a 63-year-old man named Andre Jorge Tamine, who also got busted. Authorities have yet to clarify just how Tamine is connected with Roberge and Lagace (but I’m not afraid to suggest the term sugar daddy).
The Roberge-Lagace-Tamine bust is Australia’s biggest ever drug bust from a boat or a plane. If the trio had gotten away with it, they would’ve made heaps of money. Cocaine is around five times more expensive in Australia than it is in Canada, and they were traveling with about $23 million worth of the white stuff.
8. Remember What Happened To These International Drug Smugglers?
Isabelle Lagace is 28 years old, while Melina Roberge is just 22. Now, they both are likely to spend a good chunk of time in prison. It’s like Alex and Piper from Orange is the New Black taught them nothing!
The Australian Border Force said that they worked with law enforcement in Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand to track this massive shipment of cocaine. They were onto you the entire time, ladies. But hey, at least you got some great Instagrams out of your trip.
I think this is the takeaway: Just because somebody’s Instagram looks awesome, it doesn’t mean that their lives are just as awesome. They could be smuggling 200 pounds of cocaine and get busted, in which case the Instagrams would stop quite suddenly, I’d imagine.
