Meet Muharrem, a young man living in Istanbul. Because Muharrem is deaf, most of the people he encounters in his daily life don't speak his language. Muharrem woke up one day in December 2014 expecting it to be a typical morning. He didn't know his neighbors had something special planned.
After walking by a fruit stand, a man standing nearby used sign language to offer Muharrem an apple. At that point, Muharrem began growing a little suspicious, asking his sister if she knew the signing stranger.
As they continued their walk, Muharrem and Ozlem came across more and more friendly neighbors. When they stopped in a bagel store, the owner offered Muharrem fresh bagels, and when a woman "accidentally" bumped into Muharrem, she apologized for her clumsiness ”” all in sign language.
When Muharrem entered a taxi, the driver greeted him in sign language. Muharrem continued to be both delightfully surprised and puzzled. It was almost time for the big reveal, but first the taxi brought Muharrem and Ozlem to a central plaza in the neighborhood.
By the end of the experience, Muharrem was moved to tears of surprise and appreciation for his thoughtful neighbors. For the first time, he had enjoyed a day without barriers blocking him from communicating fully with the people around him.
