New York City is renowned for its unique, ever-growing population. This island's population was estimated to be 8,537,673 in July of 2016, and there has been a monumental influx of people living in NYC in the past couple of years. There has been an increase of 362,500 citizens since April of 2010, which equates to a significant 4.4 percent boost in population. NYC is the epitome of the cultural melting pot, with over 40% of residents born outside of America and more than 200 languages spoken throughout the city. It's the best place to find some extremely interesting characters, especially when it comes to snapping some eye-catching pictures.
2. One Photographer Has Been Making Quite The Scene
It isn't hard to find a colorful character to photograph in New York City, but Brandon Stanton takes it to a personal level. Thirty-three-year-old Stanton is a former bond trader living in Chicago, and he moved to New York City in 2010 to pursue his passion for photography. His initial goal was to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers on the street, but it blossomed into something more than he could have imagined. His photography project — appropriately named Humans of New York — has over 18 million likes on its Facebook page, and its Stanton's ability to connect with his subjects that has people following his every move.
Once Stanton began adding meaningful captions to his photos, the internet responded in a big way. Adding deep and interesting interviews to the pictures of his subjects adding a very personal touch to his work, and it took off big-time on social media. "HONY was evolving from photography to mixed medium. So I really started focusing on getting better with my interviews," Stanton stated. These interviews are not always bright and filled with hope, and some of the most viral posts have been controversial and sometimes depressing.
4. Stanton Captures The Human Condition Beautifully
Whether it be starting at a new school or questioning their entire upbringing, Stanton encounters some fascinating people. Some of their struggles are unbelievably relatable, from dealing with the drug addiction of a loved one to accepting death or divorce. One of Stanton's subject is the topic of viral controversy, and it's no surprise that the internet is in an uproar!
A recent man photographed by Stanton was extremely open about his issues within his current relationship. Stanton just photographed the man's legs crossed, and it's obvious this individual didn't to be identified. The reason is clear — he has a problem with his girlfriend's weight. The internet wasn't so receiving of this information.
"Everything else about her was exactly what I wanted," the man stated. He goes on to explain that he has been dating his girlfriend for 1.5 years, but he can't get past the fact that she is overweight. "Is there any right way to ask someone to lose weight for you," he asks at the end of his interview with Stanton. This Humans of New York post has literally taken over the internet, and people are not holding back.
It's like we are transported back to 2001 and Jack Black is refusing to date anyone that doesn't meet his specific body type standards. This man's HONY interview has received over 9,000 comments and over 31,000 reactions on Facebook. The majority of people on social media have a very distinct opinion, and it speaks volumes about how we approach a woman's weight.
"And I feel like a bad person for being bothered by it. I can’t bring myself to tell her," the man stated in his interview. Are we supposed to feel bad for this guy? The internet is not the place to start attacking a woman's body, especially with the recent rise of the #metoo tag and overall body positivity that people have been spreading all over the World Wide Web. As you can imagine, the comments about this man's dilemma were brilliant.
9. Some Were Quick To Clap Back At This Insensitive Boyfriend
One Twitter user named AJ was quick to point out that the pot is definitely calling the kettle black here. "This dude is wearing cargo pants and thinks his partner is the problem?! Nah dude," he stated. Some social media users went a step further than attacking his sense of style, and they bring up some very valid points.
Most of Twitter is completely appalled by this boyfriend's crass approach to his girlfriend's appearance — and the fact that he has gone almost two years without making it clear that he has a really big problem with the relationship. "Was she that way she you met? Then why string her along? Issues after only 1.5 years? Don't waste her time. Keep it moving! Boy Bye," one Twitter user blatantly stated.
11. Not Everyone Was Against The Man's Blatant Honesty
"I can't see the big deal in making small changes, we do it in every other aspect of relationships," one Twitter user wrote. Although this is true, this man should definitely be accepting of his girlfriend — including her weight. "If she's happy in her own body why should she have to change," another person tweeted in response. Touche!
When it comes to romantic relationships, things can get super complicated. Even so, no one should have to change themselves to make someone else happy. "If you’re concerned about her health, approach it from that angle. If you’re concerned about her appearance, you should probably just stay single," one person advised. Body image has become a very viral topic, and people are beginning to choose empowerment over shame.
13. Body-Shaming Has Been Getting Its Share Of Karma
Remember the Playboy model that posted a picture online of an elderly woman showering at the gym, stating, "If I can't unsee this then you can't either"? She was taken to court for the incident, and she is on probation for three years and can't use her cellphone "in any place where persons are in a state of undress or have an expectation of privacy." Serves her undoubtedly right, and this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to people defending an individual's rights to embracing their body.
14. Everyone Deserves To Be Loved, Fully And Honestly
This HONY interviewee that was ripped apart by the internet needs to take some of the advice he received in the comments. "Break up with her now. Don’t wait. She deserves someone who loves all of her, and you need to be with someone your type," one person admitted. It comes down to being true to your partner and yourself, and this boyfriend needs to have enough respect to call it quits.
15. Humans Of New York Continues To Expose Our Struggles
Brandon Stanton continues to spotlight people in their most vulnerable moments, and it literally makes us all feel less alone in this crazy, confusing world. Whether you are running the entire country or contemplating your relationship, HONY brings us all together in a raw, real way. These photos get us thinking about our own insecurities and flaws, and sometimes it's best to confront them full-force!
