Like many other people, Claire Willett is just a little obsessed with the show Friends. But unlike a lot of Friends fans, she has an opinion on the show that could be controversial. She thinks Rachel should have ended up with Joey, not Ross.
To make her point, she created a massive thread about it on Twitter. For starters, she pointed out that Ross's desire for Rachel was due to a crush leftover from high school. Ross liked Rachel, but he didn't really know Rachel.
For instance, remember how jealous Ross was of Rachel's co-worker Mark? Sure, it turned out that Mark actually was interested in Rachel, but that shouldn't matter. Because Ross should have still trusted Rachel to turn down Mark's advances.
Ross was never all that supportive of Rachel's career. As Claire also explained, "Over and over Ross trivialized her passions, even though I would argue that Rachel's career was always her most interesting arc."
On the other hand, Joey was always offering his support for Rachel's career. Ross was too worried about how Rachel's job would affect their relationship. But Joey was the one who really cared about Rachel's professional happiness.
As Claire also said, "Circa-Joey's-roommate Rachel is my favorite iteration of all the Rachels. SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT HOW GREAT SHE IS. Short hair, playing the drums, eating spaghetti off the floor, watching 'Cujo.' What an angel."
Meanwhile, Ross and Rachel have a ton of baggage. Sure, at the end of the finale, Ross and Rachel seem pretty happy. But the next time they fight, you just know that "We were on a break!" is going to be brought up once again.
From the start of the series, pretty much everyone knew that Ross and Rachel would get together, and it's what most fans wanted. But after reading Claire's argument, you may find yourself suddenly on the Rachel-Joey bandwagon. You can read her entire 100-tweet thread on Ross, Rachel and Joey by clicking here.
