It's official: California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that grants citizens permission to smash car windows if a dog looks in danger of sitting in a hot car.
Look at this dude — he knows what's up. And what's up is the safety of pups everywhere!
According to the law, citizens are to report to the police if a car-bound animal looks threatened, but if the danger needs immediate action and the law officers are taking too long to get there, a person can smash through the windows to save the dog.
The bill comes from Assemblyman Marc Steinorth, Miguel Santiago and others after there were several cases of dogs dying when left in cars on hot days.
"We're very excited about the lives this new law will save. Thank you to everyone who helped us raise awareness of this serious issue and showed their support," said Steinorth.
The California Assembly members even filmed themselves sitting in a hot car for 20 minutes to prove how dangerous it is.
Will everyone start thinking they're Batman and maybe go to far? The law does raise some concerns.
"I think that should just be logic. If you see a dog in distress, break the window if you can't find the owner. I think some people might take it a little far, like they see a dog in there and go a little nuts. I think it depends on the condition, but I think people may take advantage and go extreme," dog owner April Rocha told ABC 7.
Basically, use your head. Don't go breaking random car windows, but the option to now do it is really awesome. No dog should suffer!
It's very important to assess the situation and act appropriately. And I can't help but picture Beyonce immediately.
