The epic struggle of Icebox in The Little Giantsspoke to your soul. She was tougher than any boy on the field, but she struggled with people's expectations of what a girl should focus on and act like. She was just like you. And you were just like her. It was a match made in heaven.
It Takes Two is a fine American film starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, respectively, as Amanda Lemmon, a tomboy orphan in and out of foster care and Alyssa Calloway, a little rich girl with Steve Guttenberg for a dad.
Brilliant filmmaking aside, Amanda's baggy t-shirts, flannels tied around the waist, overalls and backward baseball caps were the envy of every tomboy on the block.
As previously stated, pink was the worst. And anyone or anything that assumed you wanted something pink just because you were a girl infuriated you. At McDonald's, you vehemently opposed the reception of a "girl toy" in your Happy Meal. "Talkgirl" was total BS. And are you trying to sell me a bright pink basketball, sir? Because that's not how this is going to work.
While most girls pined for an Easy Bake Oven, you very calmly and rationally made your case to your parents for Creepy Crawlers. Baking was boring and Creepy Crawlers had everything you loved: bugs, fire (OK, a hot plate) and something called "Plastigoop." Awesome.
As an active, athletic tomboy, you had to have your hair out of your face at all times. If you kept it long, the low pony was your hairstyle of choice. Quick to do, effective and not too fancy ”” which was pretty much your life motto.
For other girls, gym class was a minefield of balls and pucks from which to duck and dive. For you, it was a chance to show your stuff. And to prove that girls are just as good as boys at sports (if not a million times better).
In 4th grade, the girls' sports teams in my town were laughable. Dads would pitch in girls' softball games while the boys were able to pitch in their own baseball games. And that was unacceptable to me. So I started a (super ineffectual) petition and joined the boys' baseball team. I sure showed them what's what! Not with that petition, though. I think I got, like, 12 signatures.
When cat fights broke out in the cafeteria between team *NSYNC and Team BSB, you slowly backed away and went to the gym to pretend you were playing b-ball with MJ and Bugs in Space Jam. No? That was just me?
