Plus, Gomez is doing great in other areas of her life too. She has a successful Netflix show — 13 Reasons Why and millions of fans on Instagram. Adding to that, her battle with lupus has only made the 25-year-old even stronger, more inspiring and more relatable as a human being.
During an interview with Business of Fashion, Gomez discussed the topic of mental health when talking about 13 Reasons Why. The show centers around high school teens who are dealing with the loss of a girl who has committed suicide. Gomez explained that when dealing with difficult issues, it’s best to “ask somebody you respect” for an opinion.
She elaborates, saying, “If you're around people who think that stuff is dumb, that think it's ridiculous — ‘You're crazy! You're fine!' — but you don't feel that way, then maybe it's time to reevaluate that. It's a lonely journey to really figure out where all this stuff is coming from. And to detach from it … But it is lonely, I had to lose a lot of people in my life to get there.”
Gomez adds, “You have to figure out the people that are in your circle. I feel like I know everybody but have no friends. [Laughs] I have like three good friends that I can tell everything to, but I know everyone. I go anywhere and I'm like, ‘Hey guys, how's it going?'”
Gomez explains that “it feels great to be connected to people, but having boundaries is so important.” She insists that “You have to have those few people that respect you, want the best for you and you want the best for them. It sounds cheesy, but it's hard.”
One person who we know makes the top of the list is her boyfriend — the Weeknd. The two have gone from Italy to Paris to the Met Gala red carpet to everywhere else in the world. But does the Weeknd count as a friend?
She may only have “three good friends” but with the latest news about Gomez’s health, it’s safe to say that she has one hell of a good friend. The singer has just opened up about getting a kidney transplant over the summer. The best part of this story is that the kidney was given to her by one of her friends.
Recently, Gomez shared a post of herself with her friend on a hospital bed. She added a caption, writing, “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering.”
“It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
She may not have a bunch of besties surrounding her but really, who needs a bunch when you have one friend who is willing to give you a kidney? Gomez is young and she has achieved so much but she also seems to have a good head on her shoulders. Sounds bad to say it but lupus may have just been the thing which kept this singer from spiraling and getting lost in all the noise of Hollywood.
