On September 25, locals of Maasin City, on Leyte island, woke up to discover this blob floating just off their beach. From this picture, it looks like it could be a big otter... but when you add in humans for scale...
The wasn't the only example of a mystery creature washing ashore.
This mysterious blob was also found in the Philippines. It washed up on one of the Dinagat Islands. While it was originally believed that this was the remains of a giant octopus, it was eventually discovered to be a whale that had been dead for over two weeks.
This giant sea serpent is actually an oarfish, which was found washed ashore in Carmen, Agusan del Norte, in the Philippines. It was the second oarfish to wash ashore in a week, and it caused a panic. This is because many believe that oarfish warn of an impending earthquake.
This giant blob measured 40' wide! It was found off the coast of Chile, and was originally though to be a giant squid or octopus, due to the lack of a backbone. Eventually, it was discovered to be a chunk of the remains of a sperm whale.
This 50' monster washed up on an Indonesian shore early this year. It appeared to have tusks, and set the internet ablaze with theories of what kind of monster it could be. Eventually, it turned out to be a baleen whale.
This nightmare washed ashore in Texas during Hurricane Harvey. Guesses on what it was ranged from the monster from Tremors to an alien. In the end, the correct answer came from Dr. Kenneth Tighe, a Smithsonian biologist, who identified it as a fang tooth snake-eel.
"Fang tooth snake-eel" doesn't make me feel any better.
