Johnny Depp. You know him well, from basically all of your favorite movies. Do we need to mention Pirates of the Caribbean, even? We probably really didn't, but just in case, there, we did.
Depp has always been a quirky character. When asked where the strangest place he's ever hooked up with a woman was, he said, "Wow. A car trunk. The trunk of a car. Enclosed."
And his first celebrity crush? Carol Channing. There's a lot of things you do know about Johnny Depp, like the fact that he literally is Captain Jack Sparrow and that he's awesome. But there's also a lot that you don't know.
So where did this famous tattooed man get his start?
As a kid, Depp didn’t just move around a lot, he moved 20 times. His family finally settled in Miramar, a city in South Florida, where he spend most of his teenage years.
At first, it wasn't acting that was his thing, it was music. Depp grew up playing the guitar and was in several garage bands before he became an actor. He moved out to LA with his band The Kids and they gained some success and even opened for Iggy Pop. They never quite hit it big, and then Depp got bitten by the acting bug.
Still, he hasn't forgotten about music. Depp took the Grammy stage with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry to play in his band called the Hollywood Vampires, a tribute to old rock 'n roll stars from the '70s. They cover songs like Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," and often have guest appearances from singers like Perry Farrell and Tom Morello.
Nicholas Cage got Depp his first acting gig and his first agent. Depp credits Cage for his career and in 2007, he even offered to help Cage financially when he was going through some money troubles. Move over, Tom Hanks, there's a new Hollywood nice guy, right?
Yes, he is one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, but he has never won an Oscar. He was nominated for Best Actor three times for his work in Sweeney Todd, Finding Neverland and Pirates of the Caribbean. But never has he got that sweet, sweet statue.
When he was engaged to Winona Ryder in the '90s he had “Winona Forever” tattooed on his shoulder. After they split, he had the tattoo changed to “Wino Forever.” You can never have too much wine, but apparently you can have way too much Winona.
6. He Started A Savings Account For Heath Ledger’s Daughter
After Heath Ledger died, Depp was filmingThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and he convinced his co-stars, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, to help him set up a savings account for Ledger's daughter. They took all the money that they made in the film and put it into a savings account to make sure her future was financially secure.
7. He Once Vandalized A Billboard With His Face On It
He and a friend drew a mustache on his face and blacked out a gun on a billboard for 21 Jump Street because he didn't like the message the billboard was sending. When he was caught, the officers recognized him and let him finish the job.
When he heard that, after filming Sleepy Hollow, the one-eyed horse he rode throughout the movie was going to be put down, he had to do something. He couldn't stand the thought of that, so he adopted the horse. Good looking out for Goldeneye.
9. He Was Very Good Friends With Hunter S. Thompson
Originally he was just a fan, but over the years he became very good friends with Hunter S. Thompson and starred in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in 1998 and The Rum Diary in 2011. When Thompson passed away, Depp paid for his memorial and, as per Thompson's request, he shot the writer's ashes out of a cannon.
10. He Brings His Captain Jack Sparrow Costume Everywhere
He loves to surprise kids in hospitals by making an appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow, so he brings his costume everywhere he goes. According to Depp, he'll "just sneak in and go and surprise a bunch of kiddies... It basically turns into a two, three-hour improvisation and it's really fun."
He says that his Captain Jack Sparrow character is based on a combination between Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew. Richards wound up playing Sparrow’s father in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise and now the two are great friends.
Depp has a daughter, Lily-Rose, who is now 18-years-old. "She's blowing up, it's incredible. It happened very quickly. She handles it so well and she's so low to the ground and very cool about it," he said of his daughter. She's walked down runways and modeled for Chanel, like her mother, Vanessa Paradis.
