His sudden announcement on July 24th saying that he was cancelling the rest of his tour left his fans surprised, confused and devastated. There was no real explanation. Just, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Justin Bieber will cancel the remainder of the Purpose World Tour concerts….”
As soon as he announced that he was bowing out of the rest of the tour dates, the rumors started flying. TMZ reported that Justin walked away from the tour because he “rededicated his life to Christ.” The website quotes “sources” close to the church that Bieber attends.
Hillsong Church is a Pentecostal megachurch for young celebrities. Bieber, Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner and NBA player Kevin Durant are all members. According to a 2015 GQ story it’s “Where the cool kids spend Sunday morning after Saturday night at the club.”
TMZ reported, “Bieber has been virtually joined at the hip with Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz over the last few months – including at a huge church event in Australia – but we’re told Lentz did not advocate for canceling the tour.”
I’d cancel my tour if my pastor looked like that. DAMN!
The Daily Mail reported that a few weeks before he cancelled the tour, July Bieber snuck into Sydney, Australia, on a private plane so he could attend the church’s annual conference. The Biebs and Lentz aka “Pastor Carl” or “hipster pastor,” were photographed around town together while he was there.
When he cancelled the tour on the 24th, his Aussie fans were the first to claim that Bieber was starting his own church. Australia’s Today show quoted “inside sources” saying that that was the case. The source toldToday that Bieber, “came off the road ... because he wants to reconnect with his faith, and he may be even planning to start his own church."
They continued with, “We know that he was in the country a few weeks ago having meetings and attending the big Hillsong convention that they had here. Very close to a lot of the Hillsong people. Whether he’s looking at teaming up with them or something of a more permanent situation or doing some sort of religious activity on his own, starting his own church, we’re not quite sure.”
This is the first time that he has spoken out since he cancelled the remaining dates of his tour. He first expressed his gratitude for his fans.
“Im grateful for the tours but most of all I am grateful I get to go through this life WITH YOU!...Learning and growing hasn’t always been easy but knowing I am not alone has kept me going. I have let my insecurities get the best of me at times.”
He continued: “I let my broken relationships dictate the way I acted toward people and the way I treated them! I let bitterness, jealousy and fear run my life.!!!! I am extremely blessed to have people in the past few years help me build my character back up reminding me of who I am and who I want to be!!!”
“Me taking this time right now is me saying I want to be SUSTAINABLE..” he wrote. “I want my career to be sustainable, but I also want my mind heart and soul to be sustainable. So that I can be the man I want to be, the husband I eventually want to be and the father I want to be.”
He does has angel wings tattooed on the back of his neck. He has “Son of God” tattooed across his abs. Could it be that we may need to follow him on a different and much more religious path? I guess we should never say never.
