Taking advantage of someone’s trust is one thing if that person is a total ass. Somehow, although you’re doing something bad, you don’t feel as guilty about the whole thing. You figure that the person is treating you bad and you’re balancing the relationship. Morality at its best.
But when that person is not too bad, then nothing makes it worth losing that trust. Moreover, when that person is a famous daytime television host, your betrayal turns into a viral fest. Not to mention a whole lot awkward too.
This is what happened to a woman called Nancy last week when she was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Well, technically, nothing happened to Nancy — she brought this all on herself. In the process, DeGeneres had to call her out for stealing on national television.
It seems that Nancy isn’t very good at taking instructions. Maybe memorabilia is her kryptonite. Whatever the case, when audience members were told to take only one item from the assortment of branded hats, mugs, shirts and more, Nancy couldn’t resist taking more than one.
You see, before the show started, audience members were invited to choose a branded item to take as a gift. They were instructed to take only one item. If they wanted more, they would need to purchase the item from the gift shop.
This honest audience member didn’t pull a Nancy. She took the shirt and said she would buy the hat later from the gift shop. DeGeneres was touched by her honesty and gave her the hat right when the show started.
Nancy, on the other hand, went on a domestic rampage. In the video, she is seen taking multiple items. A shot glass here and a mug there, a keychain here and a shirt there.
9. Awkward Much
Things got pretty awkward when DeGeneres showed the footage to her audience members exposing Nancy. Well, at least, Ellen looked uncomfortable and the rest of the audience looked uncomfortable. Nancy, however, seemed pretty chill about being caught.
Rather than looking uncomfortable or horrified to be exposed on national television, Nancy treats the whole situation like a joke. She giggles and covers her mouth theatrically with her hand. At one point, she slaps her hand playfully — “Bad Nancy, bad!”
She then finds the perfect "nice person excuse for doing something wrong." She tells DeGeneres that her sister couldn’t make it and she wanted to bring her back a gift. Guess her sister is the greedy one then?
Being nice and all, DeGeneres makes it clear she is not happy about one of her audience members betraying her trust. “I like that you liked the products so much that you wanted to bring one back for your sister,” she said. Again, is branded stuff really so covetable?
DeGeneres adds: “You think nobody’s watching you, and just need to be a good person just because you want to be a good person.” The audience member was then “banished” to the show’s jail — a large, stool-like iron chair placed in the corner of the studio.
Not that I find branded items very exciting. Nor does the appeal of being singled out on national television for betraying a famous person’s trust appeal to me. BUT, I feel like Nancy did a bad thing AND she got "punished" by getting a front seat to the whole show.
