We could all use some life hacks to make things easier. Some of the hacks on this list are so simple, you’ll be surprised you’ve never realized them before. Other are unconventional approaches to age-old problems.
For example, who knew that the little indent in the Tic Tac cap was meant to catch your refreshing little mints? But, I usually eat five at a time (especially the orange flavor), so this might not work for people like me. But, for those of you that only indulge in one at a time, you now know that the cap holds a purpose.
We’ve all tried to microwave some leftovers and they never seem heat up evenly. Usually the center is piping hot and the perimeter is freezing. To avoid this problem, spread the leftovers out onto the edges of the plate. It's also prettier and as we all know, prettier tastes better.
Fried eggs are an integral part of any breakfast. Heck, they’re pretty good on everything from burgers to pasta. But, sometimes when you make a fried egg, you’ll end up with a burnt bottom and a slimy top. To avoid this, place a lid over the egg when you’re frying it. This will steam the top of the egg and keep it from being runny.
You know that drawer under your oven where you usually keep your pots and pans? That’s called a warming drawer. It’s meant to keep your freshly prepared food at serving temperature. So, now you never have to serve a cold meal to your guests ever again. Just don’t forget that you left food in there.
Sometimes when you’re making a sauce or broth in a pot, you end up making a mess. Your sauce-covered wooden spoon leaves a trail of gunk all over your counter and you go back and forth between stirring and putting the spoon down. But, if your pot has a little notch, you can place the spoon inside it and avoid getting food all over your kitchen.
This has happened to everyone. You go to tear off a piece of aluminum foil and then end up pulling out the entire roll. Well, there is a little tab you can push in on the sides of the container that will hold the wrap in place. We bet you didn’t know that one.
Yep, you’ve probably been doing this wrong your entire life. I always put my headphones in the “incorrect” way on the right. A lot of the time my headphones go flying out with the slightest pull on the chord. The “correct” way will keep those things from flying out of your ears.
Next time you order a pizza, use the box as plates to avoid wasting water on washing dishes or using paper plates. This Greenbox already has perforations in the pizza box that make it easy to tear into four small plates. But, you can really do this with any box. You can also turn your Chinese takeout containers into plates by unfolding them.
If you’ve got a small closet and a lot of stuff you want to maximize as much space as possible. By using the top of a soda can, you can double up on your hanger space. Now you don’t have to just roll every item of clothing you have into a ball and throw it on the floor, like I do.
Every summer, I go through about four pairs of flip-flops. I always find a rip or split at the bottom because I’m a klutz and I trip over everything. But, if you use a bread clip, you can salvage your pair of flip-flops and hopefully don’t have to make another purchase.
Cat moms and dads can use all the life hacks they can get. If you’ve got an unruly kitty who loves to play in the bathroom (most cats do), this may help. Cats love things that dangle, and when they see a free-floating sheet of toilet paper, they will likely unravel the entire roll. Keep this from happening by tucking in the last square of TP into the roll.
To coffee connoisseurs, there’s nothing worse than a watered-down coffee. That tends to happen with iced-coffee, making the last final sips undrinkable. You can avoid this by putting coffee ice cubes instead of regular ice cubes in your iced-coffee. Just pour some freshly made coffee into an ice tray. Let it sit overnight, and in the morning mix these ice cubes in with some cold strong coffee.
While watered-down coffee is pretty bad, watered-down wine is a travesty. People like their white wine chilled. But, putting a couple ice cubes in a glass of white wine will just water it down. It’s better to keep some grapes in the freezers and throw those in your glass instead.
When you travel, clothing in your suitcase develops a stale smell. Nobody wants to go out on their first night in a new city smell like an old tennis shoe. To avoid this, throw in a couple dryer sheets in your suitcase to keep your clothes smelling fresh.
From someone who feigns smiles constantly, there’s an easier way to make it look like you’re totally not faking being a friendly person. This trick works well in photos, too. If you squint your eyes when smiling, it will appear more natural. Remember what Tyra Banks said from America’s Next Top Model: “Smile with your eyes.”
