Humans are at the top of the food chain, and we dominate any animal species we want to. (I'm not saying we ought to act that way, but we have the ability.) Still, we don't outpace other animals in all categories. There are a lot of superpowers animals possess but to which humans don't have access. Near the top of that list is camouflage. We can't blend in with anything unless we put on stupid-looking clothing patterns. But the bird in this photo blends into its environment perfectly. Even now that I've told you there's a bird in this picture, can you even see it?
Giraffes are much easier to spot when they hand out on the open savanna. Have you ever seen a giraffe in real life? I haven't. Not even in a zoo. To be honest, I'm skeptical that they really exist at all.
OK, I'm going to help you out. Look at that tree again now. Look at the part that's in-focus and that has a red circle around it. There was tiny, adorable owl concealing itself against that tree bark the whole time.
Specifically, the owl in question is an eastern screech owl. Gray eastern screech owls tend to live among hardwood trees against which their color is most effectively camouflaged. Red eastern screech owls are more often found among pine trees.
Surely you're onto my game by now. You know I wouldn't show you this picture unless it contained an animal hiding in plain sight. But even knowing that, I bet you're having trouble finding it, or even guessing what it is.
The camouflaged snaked is an Asian vine snake. Is it called that because it loved the once popular but now dead short-form video app, Vine? No, you silly billy. It's called a vine snake because it looks like a vine.
OK, I'm going to help you out. This one is really subtle, so I'll zoom in to narrow things down. I'll even tell you what the animal you're looking for is. It's a falcon. Do you see it yet? Let's zoom in a little more...
There, I circled the falcon for you. You see it now, don't you? If you ever see a falcon in real life, it'll take your breath away. I saw a falcon on my birthday, and it was the most magical birthday I ever had.
