Sadly, summer is not an exciting season for many women out there. It’s not because of the unbearable heat or the sweat though. Often, it’s because we think that we’re not fit for this season, that we don’t have the “bikini body,” thoughts which, in turn, leave us miserable and unable to enjoy the best three months of the year.
This is how it was for Kay Ska. The 22-year-old dreaded summer for over a decade. This young woman avoided the beach but she did more than that. She also wore long-sleeved T-shirts and tights because she couldn’t handle exposing her body.
For many years, Ska “struggled with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder.” She explained to TODAY style: “I did not want to look at my body or anyone else to see it.” For Ska, her struggles would take her through ten years of dread and self-loathing, while never really enjoying the perks of summer.
But these days, at 22 years old, Ska is starting to learn to look at things differently. In doing so, she is starting to learn to love her body as it is. So much so, this year, Ska bought herself a bikini for the first time in ten years.
Buying the bikini was just the start. Ska did something even bolder — something not many people would dare do. She has posted a photo of herself in a bikini and posted it on her Instagram. This girl is followed by over 10K people, so she knew perfectly well that she was going to be scrutinized.
Besides sharing a photo of herself, the 22-year-old from Blackpool, England, wrote an inspiring caption that would garner her hundreds of likes and comments. She starts the caption by saying: “It's been over 10 years since I've worn a bikini!!!.. Until today!!”
Ska then mentions the body image improvements she’s already made so far. “This summer I have already been kicking ED (eating disorder) and body dysmorphia butts but this is another milestone for me- I ACTUALLY HAVE BOUGHT A BIKINI!!!!! Here's to the first summer in such a long time where I won't be sweating my ass off in long sleeves & tights!!!”
Ska then addresses her loyal followers and shares wise words she has had to learn for herself. She wrote, “We are in control of learning to love, accept ourselves and our bodies! .... We are good enough, just as we are, right here, right now!”
Buying her first bikini in ten years wasn’t a smooth transition. Ska explained to TODAY style that when she was trying her bikini on she thought, “I can't pull this off!” There goes that mean inner voice again.
“But then I recognized that it wasn't true because EVERY body already is a bikini body,” Ska added. “I felt quite emotional. I haven't worn a bikini for over 10 years. In that moment, I realized just how far I've come. Which made me happy and grateful for the body I have now.”
This is what made her want to share a photo of herself in a bikini on Instagram. It was a way of reminding others of what she had realized herself. “[It] made me want to capture the moment and share it with my followers, as a reminder for them that our bodies are always summer-ready and we don't need to change a thing about them or go on crazy diets.”
With a second picture of herself in another bikini, Ska wrote, “Not only did I buy and wear my first bikini in decade last week, but I actually got TWO bikinis!!!! Trying bikinis on or generally new clothes still gives me a little bit of anxiety. The sizing is usually so f**ked up that you can get the same size clothing in different stores and one of them might be a lot smaller/bigger than the other.”
“However, we have to remember that we are soooooooooo much more than our clothing sizes,” Ska continued. “And appreciate our bodies for what they are, a home for our wonderful souls! A vehicle, that support us, every single day! It works for US! But it desperately needs our love, nourishment, our attention! Rather than giving in to the crazy diet culture this summer, appreciate your body for what it is, right now!”
“I am SUMMER READY,” Ska concluded, “And so ARE YOU WE ALL ARE!! (Unless you're on the other side of the world then brace yourself, WINTER IS COMING) WE ARE ENOUGH! Just as we are right here, right now!” If you want to follow Ska’s wellness journey, you can find her here on Instagram.
