Women are often quoted as saying that what attracts them to men is a sense of humor. This seems to be a classic answer now that everybody uses. So God help you, guys, if you don’t have a funny bone in your body.
Let’s pretend we’re not superficial here. That we don’t actually look at a guy’s face and body before hearing all his jokes. Let’s just go with the idea that a sense of humor really does it for us. Chris Pine, you're giving us nothing.
Well then, if this is the case, then sense of humor is getting a downgrade to another answer. Yes, it seems there’s something else that attracts women to men. This answer is backed up by multiple studies, so we’re getting technical here.
According to a study by the British Journal of Psychology, altruism is topping the list for the best quality to attract women. The study has shown that there is consistency in altruism drawing in more women. The study also found that altruistic men had more sex.
In the study, researchers asked single men to list how many good deeds they think they did. Deeds such as helping people in trouble or donating money to charity. These same participants were also asked how many sexual partners they’ve had and how much sex they had.
The answers showed consistency between altruism and having more women. The men who reported doing more good deeds had more sex and more partners than those who couldn’t care less about others. For the altruistic men who were in committed relationships, the study showed that they had more sex with their partner.
In another experiment of this same study, the researchers turned to undergraduate students. The latter were asked if they wanted to donate money to charity. Those who said yes also said that they had more casual sex and more sex in a committed relationship.
Altruism has proven to be a determining factor in other studies too. Another study, published on January 2016 in the Journal Evolutionary Psychology, surveyed 202 women who were asked to choose between different men. The choice was between men who were attractive and those who weren’t and they were also aware if the men did a good deed or not.
The study revealed that the women chose attractive men who were selfish for one-night stands. They preferred men with altruistic traits for a committed relationship, however, regardless if they were attractive or not. If one-night stands are your thing, then you don’t have to work hard at being altruistic.
There was another study of the same kind that was published in 2013 in The Journal of Social Psychology. The researchers of this study found that women saw altruism as the best measure when looking for the right partner who could potentially become a great husband and parent. In this study, women viewed altruism as an important factor for long-term but also for short-term relationships.
There was also a study, published in 2015, in Social Psychological and Personality Science which studied Germans. The study revealed that single people who revealed altruistic deeds were more likely to report being in a relationship the following year. It seems that these people found it easier to find someone than those who were not as altruistic.
Most men assume women love humor because men look like idiots and women laugh but as with everything else, humor is an indication of other things in the eyes of women. One study proved that humor was an indicator of sexual activity. Apparently, men who are seen as funny by women reported having more sex.
So now the battle is on between altruism and humor, and you're the one who's going to have to figure out which one works best. Despite the results, it’s good to keep these studies in check. The experiments were conducted in a controlled environment and remember that people describe their behavior from a subjective point of view.
Moreover, just because women have chosen altruistic men, it doesn’t necessarily prove this is the ultimate reason they go for a partner. It could be that the knowledge that a man is altruistic makes him look more trustworthy. It doesn’t mean, however, that women will always stick to the altruistic guy.
On the other hand, if you’re not into committed relationships, then you don’t have to do that much work. It seems you don’t have to do any real good deeds. But maybe you should. If not for women at least, but maybe to at least ease your conscience.
