The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta has the largest aquarium tank in the world, the Ocean Voyager exhibit, which holds 6.3 million gallons of water. It is the only aquarium outside of Asia to house whale sharks. The aquarium was funded with a $250 million donation from Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus.
Even death couldn’t separate the Lovers of Valdaro. The remains of this couple is over 6,000 years old. They were discovered in Italy close to the village of Valdaro in 2007. The couple was young when they died, between 18 and 20 years old. Some researchers believe that the couple may have frozen to death while holding each other.
Do you see that tiny blue sphere on the right side of the photo? That tiny spot is just the amount of stars we can see from Earth’s vantage point in the Milky Way Galaxy. Makes you feel pretty insignificant, doesn’t it?
This is a photo of a pike that was frozen midway through a bass. Two brothers discovered this cool find in Indiana while fishing. It looks like the pike and bass froze instantaneously. What is more likely is that the pike tried to eat the bass and choked and died. The two of them then froze.
This may make you nervous about all the comets swirling up there in space. This is an image of the Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet shown to scale next to the L.A. skyline. The image of the comet was taken from the Rosetta spacecraft and Matt Wang combined with L.A. to make the photo above.
This is a photo of an Iraqi marsh village from 1974. It’s pretty crazy to see an entire community living on these tiny patches of wetland. The marshes were drained in 1991 by Saddam Hussein, who wanted to punish rebellious marsh tribes. The dams that drained the marshes were torn down in 2003, but the marshes still have not replenished themselves to their former glory.
This is an image of a Roman soldier who was killed instantly when Mount Vesuvius erupted. You can still see his sword holstered to his side. The volcano erupted in 79 A.D. Pompeii was hit the worst by this natural disaster.
This is probably the most terrifying man I’ve ever seen in my life. This is a member of the Mongrel Mob, New Zealand’s largest gang. Kiwi photographer Jono Rotman got unprecedented access to the gang for this series of photos.
This is a photo of blue ice. It is a natural phenomenon that happens when snow falls on a glacier, becomes compressed and then part of the glacier. It appears blue because all the air bubbles are squeezed out during the compression process.
This will certainly make you do a double take. This is a photo of the stunt doubles from Game of Thrones. It’s kind of appropriate that Tyrion’s stunt double is smoking a cigarette. And Khalessi’s stunt double looks almost identical to Emilia Clarke.
This may look like a scene out of Dexter, but this is actually a veterinarians office. No, this vet is not a butcher. This is actually the result of something less extreme. This is the result of a horse’s nosebleed.
May the wrath of God descend upon you! This is an image of one of Rio de Janeiro’s frequent lightning storms. But with Christ the Redeemer way up there in the sky, it looks like he is about to smite the entire city with thunderbolts.
The Torajan people from Indonesia actually live with their dead. After a family member dies, they are kept in the home anywhere between a few weeks to a few years. They don’t believe that a person is actually dead until a water buffalo is sacrificed in their honor. Even after burial, they participate in a secondary funeral every few years. They will take the corpse out of the crypt and clean it and dress it.
