Natalie Dormer is originally from the UK, and in school she was extremely involved in extracurricular activities. She was head girl, the top in her class, traveled the world with her school’s public speaking team and was vice-captain of the school netball team, which is similar to basketball.
Dormer based Margaery Tyrell’s character on Kate Middleton and Michelle Obama. In an interview with The Daily Beast she explains, “Because Margaery is very politically savvy and our royal family tries to keep out of politics, it’s a hybrid of that statesmanship between the royal family and the first lady.”
Dormer loves to watch classic movies and admires classic movie stars like Katharine Hepburn. In an interview with Vanity Fair she reveals, “I love watching the old movies. I love Katharine Hepburn. I just adore her and everything that she stood for. I find it interesting watching the likes of Gene Tierney and those classic movies of the '40s… As an actress, I think it’s important to look back and realize that we aren’t always quite as original as we think we are.”
Before she was working consistently on TV and before she was a familiar face in Hollywood, Dormer waited tables and was a temp in an office doing data entry. She says that her being out of work for so long "was the best lesson I could have had in the first 12 months of my career."
Dormer is a huge poker fan and likes to play often. In an interview, she explained what kind of poker player she is: “I love poker! A lot of boys in my poker circle are mathematicians who play on probability. I don’t have that kind of brain, so I rely on instinct.”
And she’s not afraid to say it: “It really is crazy that the word ‘feminist’ can have negative connotations in 2014. It upsets me that the younger generation of women think it’s a dirty word, and associate it with a kind of militantism or a sense of female superiority. It’s not. It just means liberation, and equality.”
Yes, she plays royalty on TV, but rumor has it that she may also have royalty in her blood in real life. Supposedly Dormer comes from a line of British nobility including the Dormer Baronets of Wenge, the Barons Dormer, the Earls of Carnarvon, and the Viscounts Ascott. Some people even claim that she’s a direct descendent of the lady-in-waiting, Bloody Mary.
