It’s no secret that people love to hate on millennials, but it could certainly be argued that we’re just a little misunderstood! Here are 13 moments you’re bound to be familiar with if you’re a member of Gen Y.
The older generation coined the term “MRS Degree” — you know, the stories your grandma likes to tell you about how back in the day she went to college just to find a rich husband (hence the term "Mrs.").
But still, everyone knows it’s the millennials who are entitled, not the older generation. It’s us millennials who can barely afford to pay rent and will never be able to retire — we’re the entitled ones!
3. Older Generations Think You Don't Have A Sense Of Humor
Millennials just can’t take a joke, can they? Not like back in the old days when you could tell a good ol’ racist joke and get away with it every time! How dare those millennials call out offensive behavior!
And of course, we have to mention the crippling debt you acquire after you graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Not like in the good old days, when our hard-working parents could just work a summer job and pay for their whole college tuition that way.
(But let’s not talk about the fact that college tuition has increased by nearly 260% from what it was in 1980. Nope, that’s clearly irrelevant.)
Let’s just bring it back to this whole being-broke thing: weddings are expensive. Like, really expensive. “When there’s rough economic times, marriage rates go down,” Sociologist Eric Klinenberg toldThe Washington Post. “People don’t feel comfortable committing to someone during hardships.”
Because every millennial knows that guy who thinks he’s waaayy above the rest of his generation. He’s different, because he doesn’t listen to Nicki Minaj and he doesn’t have a Facebook account, and that makes him unique and edgy.
9. You Just Keep Getting Blamed For Ruining The Economy
We’ll just leave this here. But really though, scapegoating much? The recession didn’t magically start when millennials became of working age. It was a slow process that began in the ‘80s, and that was, oh yeah, before a lot of millennials were even born.
You’re 27 years old and still living with your parents? Well, that could be because the cost of living in a lot of places is disturbingly high. But let’s not focus on that...let’s just all point fingers and call the millennials lazy freeloaders!
But really though, does any twenty-something really want to live with their parents…?
11. People Complaining That Your Hobbies Are 'Stupid'
Let’s face it: we’re the generation that popularized dating and hookup apps like Tinder, so it’s understandable that we would be less inclined towards commitment. But, let’s put it this way: Is it better to get married young, have kids and then divorce by age 30, or hook up for a while and part ways?
Older generations often like to point out that it’s the millennials who are causing the divorce rates to skyrocket due to their hatred of commitment, but in reality, divorce among younger Americans today is relatively rare, according to The Washington Post.
On the other hand, “the Baby Boom generation was responsible for the extraordinary rise in marital instability after 1970….their pattern of high marital instability continues.”
14. Every Generation Just Blames You For Everything Ever
When it comes down to it, every single generation thinks the younger generation is the worst thing to ever happen, so don’t sweat it too much! Before you know it, millennials will be the ones yelling "get off my lawn" at Generation Alpha!
